Hi I'm Matthew Ford, I have been involved in health care since I was born, with my parents being private practice Osteopaths and Physiotherapists and my Grandfather being an Obstetrician Gynaecologist; this exposure inspired me to follow my inner calling to open Ford Acupuncture.
I was brought up working in my parents' clinic as reception staff and receiving all sorts of alternative health treatments for sporting injuries. Through receiving these treatments I found myself learning little treatment and communication techniques and storing them away for some reason for the future. It wasn't until many years later after trying my hand at Banking and Finance, Hotel and Tourism Management and Nursing that I finally gave in to the inner urge to begin my Acupuncture Journey.
The Course was arduous and challenging as there were many Western Medicine subjects to get through (pathology 1,2 & 3, biology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, psychology, and the list goes on) which was tough considering we were learning the East Asian philosophies and poetic language of Traditional Chinese Medicine at the same time.
It was at the end of my first year of this grind that it dawned on me that this was definitely my destiny and I was happy to keep chipping away. After 4 years, 43 subjects, 3 summer schools, countless assignments and more than 150,000 words submitted and who knows how many exams and oral presentations; it was done. I made it!
Having grown up in Queensland, Australia, I played most sports under the sun. Cricket, Football (soccer), Rugby Union, Tennis, Archery, Aussie Rules, Javelin and the list goes on..
After school and during my first stints at uni I travelled around the place and wound up spending 4 ski seasons in North America and Canada which sparked a real enthusiasm for the snow and new found love of snow sports. I love snowboarding and it is one of the hardest parts of living in Queensland; there is no snow!!
These days, after moving to the Sunny Coast over 4 years ago, I have substituted the snowboard for surfing and wake-boarding.
Through these sporting activities, studying the human body at uni and clinical hands-on experience I have gained a great insight and understanding of how the body's physiology performs. This has lead to my passion for musculoskeletal pain and injuries both acute and chronic.
I have lived my life so far. I have been on many adventures, worked many different jobs and industries, experimented and made mistakes; but I have always made sure to keep learning and to adapt and evolve when called on to do so. This journey into Acupuncture began many years ago for me as I was a small child I suffered from chronic debilitating earache that no one could seem to do anything about.
One day, I was about 3 years old, my Dad put me in his his yellow MGB and drove for several hours to a friend of his house who was an Acupuncturist. Within 3 treatments, what was the most fearful thing in my life and excruciating was gone, never to return.
I was too young to get stuck into researching it then, but I guess that has always been there to guide me. After several similar experiences, finally I woke up in hospital after a bicycle accident, not remembering anything, and received Acupuncture and moxibustion for a partially separated Acromioclavicular (AC) Joint, the sole of my foot that was nearly ripped off and a concussion. I was blown away by the feeling of energy pulsating throughout my entire body in waves of what felt like light or energy (or Qi as we call it). It was incredible to have the quietude inside to be able to feel these subtitles and it felt like someone was trying to tell me something...This along with my astoundingly rapid healing process was enough to finally catalyse my journey and I was signed up and in Acupuncture class 3 weeks later! The rest as they say is history..
Today, my wife Debbie have just welcomed our first child into the world so no doubt my interests will change quite dramatically with his arrival. This is exciting for me as I see life as all about accepting and going with change.
Now that you know a little about me, let's focus on you and your journey!
I look forward to meeting you and working with you to attain your optimal health.
